The Power of Math

by John Gilmar Delgado

Mathematics plays a very important role in high school education. Even though many of us would agree math is not such an interesting subject, its value has a big impact to human development. How do you perceive the relevance of studying Math as a student?
“Math is just a part of my studies that needs to focus on”, says Patrick Esguerra, a junior student from section Argon. “It also helps me on how to compute my daily budget.” John Ruiz, also from section Argon, shares “Math is one of the most challenging subject. It is always at hand as we count, compute, and write. “
I agree with them. Other fields of discipline need mathematical applications. In chemistry, units of measures like grams, liter, and centimeters, which are mathematically allied, are used to find the characteristics of the object being studied or experimented. We also use numbers as we count the dance steps, approximate the remaining space in our memory card, determine the speed of our computer, et cetera.
Math is not just a subject. It is our mentor that makes us alert and it refuses us from being confused on real life problems. It is a good relief to solve problems and live a happy life. A famous quote says, “The essence of Mathematics is to make complicated things simple, not to make simple things complicated.” We are only making math a complicated one but in reality, it is not. It just depends on how we deal with it that causes tricky situation.
To excel in math, love math. Let’s be like those valedictorians who valued mathematics. Be inspired by those math wizards who strive to learn more and be excellent on it. It is a great thing to hear from our friends or classmates that they admire you because they see your eagerness to study mathematics. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you pick up the lesson but what matters is your desire to become skilled on analyzing and solving math problems. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a math book and start studying math right now!

A Lesson from Farmville

Do you have a facebook account? If you don’t have any, it’s time to be in with others coz most of the people nowadays are enjoying browsing and exploring Facebook features. You can post what’s on your mind, letting others know your feelings, your thoughts, or anything you want to share with others so they could comment or give their views about what you have posted on your wall. You can also publish your pictures with captions and you can tag your friends there. It’s like an electronic photo album so you can share your moments with others. Through this, your old friends would still recognize you even you are far from them. You would be missing your friends and be inspired after viewing their albums.

Another interesting and very addictive part of the Facebook is playing Farmville. It is one of the online games available in this website and the most played game at present. How could I imagine that this game has made me so focused and determined to get my level higher. I think it’s every player’s goal to get at least one level in a day every time he or she plays. If he/she has no time to go higher and to plant more trees or seeds, the player has options to select which items are best for him or her to plant and harvest on his comfort schedule.

I have solicited some views of selected fourth year students on how they think of Farmville. Angela Cruz thinks that it is fun and so great to play. She finds it as a wasting of time if you are addicted to it. Mark Nicolai Bandiola adds that it’s so nice to play where you can experience to plow and harvest just like what a typical farmer is doing. Although it’s only an online game, our patience and desire to make our farm a good one to our friends who visit here, gives me understanding how hard and happy is to be a farmer.

Marlyn Orapa treats the game as a means to relax especially for those people who are loaded with problems. She agrees with Angela and Mark that this is so addictive to play. Her imagination works every time she thinks on how she can improve and beautify her farm. For Josephine Henriksen’s opinion, she thinks that it’s quite practical for those interested in planting or farming because she observes that her friends are really enjoying doing the farm activities and they like it. But for Daniel Martin Manubay he said that Farmville becomes his favorite avocation. Farming on the computer teaches him a lot although it’s impossible to harvest in a couple of hours unlike in the real farming and harvesting period.

I came to the point that in our lives, like in Farmville, we plant and harvest. If we want to have a good harvest, we will plant good seeds. So every time we choose which seeds we gonna plant, whatever we sow, we will reap. “Kung ano ang tinanim, ay siyang aanihin”. It’s true in a real farm. The mango tree will not bear santol fruit. If we plant strawberry seeds, we will harvest strawberries.

Life is like playing on a farm. We need to plow, plant, fertilize and harvest in order for us to live and be pleasing to God. The good works are the seeds. If we plant good works, we will earn good things. Plow the land by preparing our minds the field we like to work on. Plant good seeds on the field and this is investing of good works. Fertilization is done if we keep on doing great things to others. And we will harvest the best fruits of our work.

This year, let’s have the desire to start investing good things. Investing good things include going through the thorns of life. And God uses trials to make us strong. The more trials we face, the more blessings we will receive from Him. But don’t think that He is an unfair God. He is not that. God knows what is best for us. He knows what we need. He knows everything about us. Just trust Him and do what is pleasing to Him. Let’s invest for God’s kingdom. And we will receive the greatest harvest in the future. Be patient in doing the right things and God will reward us.
